Graphics and drama combine to reveal more of the hidden workings of the human body. In this week's Body Story we discover how our bodies turn against us to give us allergies and even threaten our lives. A simple wasp sting triggers cells throughout Phoebe's skin to make her fatally allergic to wasps. when she's stung again, on a Florida beach holiday, Phoebe's body mounts one of of its most primitive and powerful chemical defences, one that could kill her in minutes. As she goes into anaphylactic shock, she starts to swell up, her airways shut down and her heart falters. Her only hope is urgent hospital treatment - if she can get her there in time.

Mike Small is in big trouble. Body Story reveals the inside story of food poisoning, as computer graphics allow us to witness the invasion of his gut by millions of tiny salmoneela bacteria. They've only got one aim - to breed. Mike's body fights back - with cells that slither across his gut lining to take on the bacteria, and with cruder methods to flush the bacteria out - in either direction. As the battle gets increasingly ugly, mike's latest assignment - talking the snaps for a frozen vegetable company calendar - looks like it might be flushed down the pan.

21 year old Greg Moore is in for the night of his life. Having just been promoted at work he has something to celebrate. He plucks up the courage to ask Laura, an attractive girl from his office, out for a drink.

Like all humans, Greg is a man with two brains. Lurking deep beneath his highly evolved and rational brain is another more primitive brain. Usually his higher brain - or cerebral cortex - rules his behaviour, but tonight his animal brain - or limbic system - is going to get the better of him. At first all goes well. We see how drinking alcohol rids Greg of his inhibitions. Alcohol floods into the gaps between his brain cells and begins to turn off his higher brain. As a result the balance of power tips in favour of his primitive brain, and his animal drives - especially for sex - start to dominate his behaviour. He becomes more and more intimate with Laura and we see how the body gives out and responds to signals of sexual attraction.

But when he loses Laura at a party Greg consoles himself with even more alcohol. Eventually even the most primitve parts of his brain start to shut down and Greg finds himself disorientated, lost and incapable of walking or talking.

This week, Body Story combines drama with cutting edge computer animation to explore the processes of damage and repair that the human body experiences in severe trauma. Like all perfectly healthy people, David and Laura are only ever three minutes away from death – the time it takes for brain cells to die when starved of oxygen. As they experience the extreme forces unleashed in a head-on car crash, it looks like their days are numbered. David’s most vital organ, his brain, slams into his own skull, knocking him unconscious and leaving him in a coma. Laura seems to get off more lightly. But the crash has left her with dangerous and hidden internal bleeding. Her own personal time bomb just started ticking.

Holly Jones is a 25 year old singer, who works as a motorcycle courier to pay her rent. Her band’s first gig is just two days away. But today fate brings her together with a common yet potentially deadly organism – the influenza (flu) virus. The tiny virus infiltrates one of Holly’s throat cells, seizes control, and begins to clone itself. Six hours later, 10000 viruses are let loose in her throat. We witness the remarkable battle that takes place beneath Holly’s skin as her immune system fights back. And we show that her flu symptoms are not caused by the virus itself, but by her body’s own attempts to destroy the alien invader. Wave after wave of immune cells are launched towards her throat to attack the virus. Whilst this is happening Holly can neither work nor sing, and her position in the band is threatened. But as her immune system finally eliminates the virus, so Holly recovers her voice and fitness. She is left to fight another day, and in a twist of poetic justice the virus finds itself another host.

87 year old Bob Bridges lives a quiet life in a seaside town. His biological purpose - to reproduce and rear children - was fulfilled long ago and he has now reached the day that will come eventually to all of us. The day when his body finally shuts down after a lifetime of renewing itself against everyday wear and tear. We see what the years have done to Bob’s body. His cells have started to die off and are no longer efficiently replaced. And when cells die, organs degenerate. Bob can no longer move as fast because his lungs, heart and muscles no longer function efficiently. He can no longer see as well as he could as film upon film of protein has covered the lenses in his eyes. He can’t regulate his body temperature because the blood vessels in his skin are furred up like old pipes and can no longer constrict in low temperatures. Ageing is an inevitable part of being human - and its ultimate end is death. The decline continues to the point where Bob’s body is no longer capable of sustaining life. We witness how his body finally shuts down. Slowly, organ after organ and cell after cell ceases its activity. But part of Bob, his DNA, quite literally lives on in his son and grandson.

Ian and Marion Swift are on a rock climbing trip, unaware that events are about to change their lives forever. Just six days ago one of Ian’s sperm fertilised an egg in Marion’s fallopian tube. If the tiny embryo survives, Marion’s body is in for the most dramatic nine months of its life.

We follow Marion through every stage of her pregnancy. In the early weeks the embryo has only a fragile grasp on life. To survive it must take control of Marion’s body and turn it into a life-support machine. We see the extraordinary transformations that go on within her body as the foetus builds itself a safe and secure home in which it is fed, protected and allowed to grow. Her heart enlarges to provide the foetus with extra blood, her bones give up some of their strengthening calcium to her new guest, and her own well-being comes second to the growing demands of the new life inside her. The foetus is control of pregnancy from day one, right through to the bitter end. It even triggers its own birth, making Marion’s womb contract, to force its way into the world.

John Palmer is 45 years old – the foreman on a construction site. He lives a stressful life, working to tight deadlines, snatching meals when he can and doing little exercise. Over the years, excess cholesterol has created fatty growths - or plaques - in the narrow arteries which supply blood to his heart. Each plaque is a tiny time bomb. It won’t take much to trigger a crisis.

John is having a bad day, but it’s about to get much worse. A spontaneous football game on the building site sets of a series of events that leaves John’s life in the balance. As he chases after the ball, blood flows through his narrow coronary arteries with growing speed and pressure. A plaque bursts, and a blood clot forms leaving part of his heart cut off from its oxygen supply. John is having a heart attack.

We follow the emergency team who battle to save him. They give him a drug which dissolves the clot. But as blood flows back to his starving heart muscle, one microscopic heart muscle cell starts beating out of time. This single cell is all it takes to disrupt the rhythm of his heart so much that it goes into VF - ventricular fibrillation. It shivers uncontrollably, pumping no blood at all. The medics must stop John’s heart completely for a few seconds to allow it to return to normal. Will John survive?
